EDUCATION MANAGER

REPORTS TO: Director of Operations
HOURS: Part-time
JOB SUMMARY: The Education Manager supports the York Symphony Orchestra’s commitment to education and community engagement. This part-time role leads several specific initiatives throughout the season that link the YSO to its enthusiastic community. The Manager develops strong relationships with area education and community leaders to create meaningful programs that speak to their unique needs. The Education Manager’s responsibilities include working together with YSO staff and musicians to produce the following yearly initiatives:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Young Person’s Concerts (YPC)

Young Person‘s Concerts are geared towards grades 3 through 5, are fifty-minutes each, and offered at no cost. The YSO performed two “sold out” programs for 2,500 students at the Appell Center in 2023. A third program is added for 2024. All programs are offered during the school day in early November.

Education Manager Responsibilities:

  • contact elementary / homeschool teachers and leadership to populate three YSO concerts.
  • maintain efficient and prompt communication with all teachers and chaperones regarding thematic material of the program (as determined by artistic staff), arrival and departure planning, concert etiquette overview, and post-concert feedback.
  • schedule and assist the Appell Center staff with coordination of bus arrival and departure on concert days.
  • provide individual assistance for students in need of special accommodation.

Master Classes

The YSO offers master classes led by featured soloists of selected concerts from the Classical series (five classes are scheduled for the 2024-2025 season). Master Classes are free and open to the public and are currently held on concert Saturdays following the morning YSO dress rehearsal.

Education Manager Responsibilities:

  • work with YSO members and area teachers to identify student performers for each class (three per class).
  • gather repertoire information from performers, distribute scores to guest artists through the Operations staff two weeks in advance, and create score copies for audience members.
  • arrange collaborative piano artist for participants as needed.
  • create printed programs for master class.
  • oversee master class location setup, distribute programs, welcome guests, keep time for each participant, assist with guest artist hospitality as needed for the class.
  • follow up with participants.

In-School Performances

Present 30-minute performances to grades K through 2 at their elementary schools. A small ensemble from YSO will curate a unique program to tour approximately twenty schools during the spring (this season features a YSO Brass Quintet).

Education Manager Responsibilities:

  • Contact elementary schools to schedule performances in line with YSO service limitations.
  • Gather all performance details for each school and ensure suitable performance conditions for performers
  • Coordinate with YSO members to create a reasonable rehearsal schedule, preferably in line with an already-scheduled YSO series
  • Assist with creation of presentation as needed (worksheets, printed programs, visual aids, etc)
  • Gather feedback from schools following each performance

York Summer Music Academy (YSMA)

The YSO and York College host a one-week summer (late June) music experience for area middle and high school musicians.

Education Manager Responsibilities:

  • Work with area private teachers and directors to recruit middle and high school musicians
  • Manage applications / audition video submissions
  • Work with YSO / York College staff to identify YSMA leadership and coaches as needed
  • Lead or assist with creation of schedule and ensemble assignments as needed
  • Manage general logistics of the YSMA as needed (shared with YSO Operations and York College)

Mentorship Program

The YSO invites members of area youth music organizations to select events. This year, participants in the program observe part of a YSO rehearsal, meet with selected YSO members or staff / enrichment activity, and have pizza together (two events this season).

Pre-Concert Lectures

The YSO Assistant Conductor leads a pre-concert lecture before each Classical series performance from 6:30pm – 7:00pm.

GENERAL

  • Maintain prompt and clear communication with all YSO staff and stakeholders
  • Work with Operations staff as needed to create efficient plans to implement each project
  • Track and report all project activity to the Executive Director as it applies to the YSO strategic plan
  • Assist YSO staff and musicians with events as they arise based on availability (e.g., organize a one-time chamber ensemble for a donor party, organize a group to play at the Miller Make Music Day, send a coach to a youth orchestra rehearsal upon request, etc.)
  • Create agenda and minutes for YSO Community Engagement Committee (occurs during concert weeks)
  • Assist as needed during YSO performance weekends
  • Create an atmosphere of enthusiasm about music and the orchestral world

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience in classical music management or arts administration
  • Experience performing as part of an orchestra or chamber ensemble
  • Ability to maintain prompt communication with diverse stakeholders
  • Demonstrated success in project management
  • Passion for the role of the orchestra in community education and outreach

 

COMPENSATION

This is a part-time, project-based position with a compensation range of $22,000 – $28,000 based on experience. While much of the work may be done remotely, in-person attendance is expected for all YSO concerts, projects, or meetings as needed. Most activities (Young Person’s Concerts, master classes, mentorship, pre-concert lectures, committee meetings) occur during the six Classical concert weeks.
