Our season concludes with Schubert’s seminal “Unfinished Symphony” and Mendelssohn’s “Symphony-cantata Hymn of Praise.” Schubert composed the first two movements of his 8th symphony before his untimely death at age 31. Perhaps one of music’s greatest unanswered questions is why the work remained “Unfinished.” The York Symphony Chorus joins the orchestra on Mendelssohn’s “Symphony-cantata.” Mendelssohn wrote this symphony to honor the unveiling the statue of Gutenberg. Due to Gutenberg spread of Protestantism, Mendelssohn used text from biblical scripture on a journey of suspense and hope.
