Programming
French inspiration is interspersed through the program featuring Darius Milhaud’s Scaramouche and Lawrence Golan’s Giovanna d’Arco. Darius Milhaud’s Scaramouche showcases the acclaimed alto saxophonist Branford Marsalis. Inspired by Harlem jazz, Scaramouche repeats familiar, cheerful melodies. John Williams’s Escapades for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra effuses progressive jazz, which highlights Branford Marsalis. Composed to honor Maestro Golan’s daughter, you do not want to miss the East Coast premiere of Golan’s Giovanna d’Arco. Hector Berlioz’s dramatic Symphonie fantastique follows a hero to his demise.
